Keiki Compete at BGCM “Little Chef, Big Chef” Event – Maui Now, October 18, 2015

Friday evening more than 300 guests attended the Boys and Girls Club of Maui inaugural “Little Chef, Big Chef” gala at the Grand Wailea.

Maui Now’s Malika Dudley interviewed event chair and board member Karey Kapoi before checking in with the Lahaina Club’s team and their chef mentor, Sheldon Simeon. Check out the video above to see the keiki hard at work and the wonderful dishes that they prepared.

The evening began with pupus prepared by teams comprised of Club members in collaboration with some of Maui’s top chefs. The teams participated in a friendly culinary competition to kick off the night. There were five categories of competition; People’s Choice, Best Tasting, Best Presentation, Most Creative and Best Farm to Table. Each team was awarded the top prize in at least one category so that all Club members left winners.

Central Club was paired up with Chef Isaac Bancaco of Ka’ana Kitchen. The Paukukalo Club was with Chef James Domingo of Leilani’s on the Beach. The Makawao Club collaborated with Chef Mike Lofaro of Humuhumunukunukuapua’a. The Ha’iku Club was paired with Chef Grant Oura of Rua Catering and the Lahaina Club was mentored by Chef Sheldon Simeon of Migrant Maui.

The competition was followed by dinner prepared by the Grand Wailea’s Executive Chef Ryan Urig and world-class entertainment by Grammy winner Tia Carrere.
